HR Outsourcing…A Positive Step

An increasing number of organizations now see the multiple advantages in HR outsourcing. A Human Resources department is the backbone of an organization. Success and profitability depend on HR’s efficiency and functionality. In the current business climate, organizations are unable to function successfully without a fully-fledged onsite HR team.

Companies are discovering new tactics such as outsourcing their non-core business activities to leverage their expertise on key functions. Many HR roles such as payroll administration, employee benefits, HR management, and risk management are now being strategically outsourced. HR professionals across the globe are considering HR outsourcing as a key tool to help them achieve their strategic objectives. HR Outsourcing is seen as an opportunity to improve performance and reduce risks.

Recent surveys reveal that outsourcing is expected to generate nearly $60 billion by 2005. The advantages are not just in cost-cutting; employee data is more efficiently managed, service delivery is improved, in-house potential is maximized, and the ability to focus on core areas significantly transforms the way businesses perform.

Large organizations benefit a great deal by their association with a professional employer organization. They handle the entire Human Resources department, taking full responsibility for employee welfare including recruitment, termination, and appraisals. However, outsourcing can provide the greatest long-term benefit for smaller organizations employing fewer people. Such organizations have insufficient staff and funds to manage the nitty-gritty details of Human Resources that have to be handled appropriately to produce the best results and avoid downsides. Smaller organizations could utilize e-services, where everything is very cost-effective because it is handled online. The biggest challenge, however, lies in determining the nature of the functions to be outsourced.

The future of HR outsourcing is bright; the year 2004 has seen HR outsourcing grow and become more mature. Currently, 87% of US companies outsource major HR functions. 57% of European companies do so, while the UK, Asia-Pacific and Latin America are yet to gain ground. Today, organizations are finding better ways of managing their outsourcing relationships. In many organizations, HR outsourcing is likely to be high on the agenda.
