Interview Tips for Employers
- The quality of a good interviewer is to encourage the candidate to open up and do most of the talking.
- The interviewer should be an active listener and a good questioner.
- The interviewer should acknowledge his prejudices and not apply them at the time of the interview.
- Time should be handled efficiently by preparing in advance the kind of questions the candidate needs to be asked.
- If the interviewed candidate is not suitable for the post it is better to tell him upfront in a very polite manner that his job profile does not match the company’s requirements rather than telling him that you will let him know later.
- Treat candidates equally and try to ask the same questions of all of them.
- Arrange an interview at a desk for two rather than in a big empty conference hall. This will make the candidate nervous.
- Ask simple informal questions at the beginning to encourage natural conversation.
- Don’t be too aggressive by leaning forward but try to relax and make the candidate feel comfortable.
- Use a neutral tone of voice to maintain a cordial atmosphere. Try and avoid too many hand signals and expressions. The candidate is aware that you’re the boss.
- Smile, nod, and make acknowledgements while the candidate is speaking. Avoid cold stares.
- Avoid too many personal questions if you find the candidate is not comfortable.
- While interviewing the opposite sex, maintain appropriate body posture and try not to get carried away.
- Don’t make the candidate wait too long to be interviewed. Time is precious for both of you.
- Try not to dwell on first impressions.
