Discover The Art Of Resume Dressing
Dressing up for the occasion
Even resumes need to be tailored to the occasion. Imagine walking into a
conference hall wearing a t-shirt and shorts. You’d be a laughing stock and a
total misfit. It’s the same if your resume is not in tune with the post applied
for. A person with an engineering degree applying for a marketing job should
clearly state his career objective in the sales field, highlighting his
personality traits and marketing capabilities irrespective of his educational
background.
Wrinkle free resumes
Too many lines of content will take up too much reading time and will not look
presentable. A single page resume containing all the essentials in a clear and
concise manner will work better than one that is filled with pages of text –
unless you have several years of experience. Organize your information and
highlight features of which you are proud and confident; for example, skills,
core competencies, and experience.
Fitting resumes
Check if your resume fits the position or job vacancy you are applying for. Do
you have the necessary qualifications and skills that are highlighted in the
job profile? If not, there is no harm in rewriting your resume, even if it is
for the hundredth time. The necessary information should be reliable, although
the degree of reliability could vary for some. This is entirely left to the
individual’s discretion and his confidence regarding the job he is applying
for.
Presentation
Determine how you are going to present your resume. Are you going to fax it,
mail it, or e-mail it? However you plan to send it, ensure that it is neat and
printed on clean paper. Check for spelling and grammatical errors. Black and
white resumes work with any medium much better than colorful and frivolous ones
– unless you’re trying to get into the media or the advertising industry, where
all kinds of creativity and innovation are welcomed.
Loose ends
When mentioning salary, never use specific figures. You could be overquoting or
underquoting your expectations, thereby either preventing yourself from getting
the job of your choice or getting the job at a better salary. Also, never
include references in your resume – always mention that they are available upon
request.
